Every job we fit starts the same way — a free home survey, careful measurement and a conversation about what the homeowner actually needs from their shutters. Today's installation in Ipswich was a bedroom bay window, and the brief was clear from the outset: full height hardwood shutters across the full bay, with a split that allows independent control of the upper and lower sections for privacy management without losing the light.

The homeowner had originally been using nets and curtains across the bay, but wanted something cleaner, fresher and more practical for everyday use. Appearance mattered too — they had seen shutters fitted in neighbouring properties locally and liked how they transformed the room from both inside and outside the house.

Here is how the installation went.

The specification

Shutter style: Full height with privacy split — independently operating upper and lower sections on each panel

Material: 100% Paulownia hardwood

Louvre size: 63mm — the right choice for a bedroom bay of this scale. Large enough to suit the proportions of the bay without being so bold that they dominate the room. 63mm louvres in a bedroom create a clean, considered appearance and allow excellent light management through the tilt mechanism.

Finish: White

Mounting: Face fitted within the window reveal, panel by panel following the geometry of the bay

The window

The bay itself had an awkward geometry which required careful measuring and fitting to ensure the panels aligned correctly across the full width of the window. One of the challenges with this installation was the absence of a traditional windowsill — something many bay window installations naturally rely on when fitting shutters cleanly within the reveal.

Each panel of the bay was measured individually during the survey stage, with widths checked at the top, middle and bottom of every section alongside reveal depth and bay angles. In a bay window installation the relationship between the angles matters just as much as the dimensions themselves, particularly when working with full height shutters that need to maintain a consistent appearance across the entire bay.

The window had previously been dressed with ageing nets and curtains hung across the opening rather than within the bay itself. The homeowner explained that the old window coverings had started to feel tired and dated, and one of the main motivations behind the project was to make the room feel fresher, cleaner and more finished.

The installation

The installation itself was completed over the course of the afternoon, with each shutter panel fitted individually to follow the shape and angles of the bay precisely. Because the reveal depth varied slightly across sections of the window, careful adjustment was required during fitting to maintain even sightlines and smooth panel operation across the entire installation.

Particular attention was paid to the split position on each panel so that the privacy line aligned naturally across the bay when viewed from both inside and outside the room. This detail becomes especially important in bedroom installations where the homeowner uses the upper and lower sections differently throughout the day.

Once fitted, the shutters immediately changed the feel of the room. Instead of curtains sitting across the bay opening, the shutters allowed the actual shape and depth of the bay window to become part of the room again.

The privacy split — why it matters in a bedroom

The privacy split on this installation was the detail the homeowner cared most about. A bedroom bay window presents a specific challenge — you want natural light in the morning, you want the upper window to remain open for the view, but you need privacy at the lower section where the line of sight from the street or neighbouring properties is at eye level.

With a standard full height shutter the choice is binary — open for light or closed for privacy. With the privacy split the upper and lower sections operate independently. The lower panels can remain closed while the upper panels are fully open — flooding the room with natural light while maintaining privacy where it matters most. Or the louvres on both sections can be adjusted simultaneously to filter light at any angle across the full height of the bay.

For a bedroom this is not a luxury feature — it changes how the room works every single day.

The finished result

The finished shutters gave the bedroom a far cleaner and more structured appearance than the previous curtains and nets. Because the shutters were fitted directly within the bay reveal, the geometry of the bay itself became far more visible, helping the window feel like a feature of the room rather than something hidden behind fabric.

The homeowner particularly liked how fresh the room felt once the shutters were in place, commenting that they looked even better than expected once fitted. The balanced proportions of the 63mm louvres suited the scale of the bay extremely well and created a softer appearance than larger louvre sizes would have achieved in the same space.

From outside the property the unified appearance across the bay also worked particularly well, giving the front elevation a cleaner and more finished look while maintaining privacy within the bedroom. For homeowners considering shutters for bay windows, this type of installation demonstrates why full height hardwood shutters remain one of the most effective long-term solutions for both appearance and practicality.

Is a bay window in your bedroom worth shutters?

If your bedroom has a bay window the honest answer is almost certainly yes. The combination of a bay window and shutters is one of the most architecturally satisfying treatments available in British domestic interiors — the shutters follow the geometry of the bay, create a unified appearance across all panels and provide light and privacy management that curtains simply cannot match.

This is particularly true in a Victorian bay window where the proportions and depth of the bay suit plantation shutters exceptionally well. The independent upper and lower control means homeowners never have to choose between privacy and natural light again.
