Hardwood vs MDF Shutters in Suffolk — Why the Coastal Climate Changes Everything

Every shutter company will tell you that hardwood is better than MDF. Most of them will not tell you why in any specific detail, and very few of them will tell you what actually happens to MDF shutters in a coastal environment over time.


We have been fitting shutters across Suffolk for nearly thirty years. We made the decision to fit exclusively hardwood shutters because of what we have seen in this county — not as a marketing position, but as a practical conclusion based on direct experience. This post sets out that case in full.


What MDF actually is — and why it matters


MDF stands for medium density fibreboard. It is manufactured by breaking wood down into fibres, mixing those fibres with resin and wax binders, and pressing the mixture under heat and pressure into flat boards. The result is a dense, consistent, easy-to-machine material that takes paint well and costs considerably less than solid timber to produce.

For furniture in a dry, stable environment it performs reasonably well. For shutters in a coastal county like Suffolk, its fundamental composition creates problems that are difficult to avoid.


The core issue is that MDF is a wood composite. The wood fibres it contains still respond to moisture — they absorb it and release it as the environment changes. But because those fibres are compressed together with resin rather than forming a natural, interlocking grain structure, the way MDF responds to moisture is less predictable and less reversible than the way solid timber responds.


When MDF absorbs moisture the board swells — particularly at the edges and faces where moisture enters most readily. When it dries again it does not always return to its original dimensions. Over multiple cycles of wetting and drying, the board progressively distorts. In a shutter panel this manifests as louvres that no longer sit flush, panels that bow slightly and paint that lifts at the edges where the board surface has moved beneath it.

Why Suffolk's climate makes this matter more than elsewhere


Suffolk is not a particularly wet county. Average rainfall is lower than most of England. But coastal Suffolk — the stretch from Walberswick and Southwold in the north down through Aldeburgh to the Deben estuary at Woodbridge — has a specific microclimate driven by its proximity to the North Sea.


Salt-laden air is the primary concern. Salt is hygroscopic — it attracts and holds moisture from the atmosphere. When salt deposits settle on a surface and the atmospheric humidity fluctuates, the surface experiences repeated micro-cycles of wetting and drying that are more damaging than simple rainfall. This is why metalwork corrodes faster near the coast, why painted surfaces degrade faster and why window treatments that absorb moisture fail faster.



For MDF shutters in a coastal property in Southwold or Aldeburgh, this process begins from the day of installation. The rate depends on the exact location, the orientation of the window and how well-sealed the property is, but the direction of travel is always the same.


We have seen MDF shutters in seafront properties on the Suffolk coast begin to show edge swelling within three years of installation. We have seen painted MDF shutter faces develop hairline cracks that allow moisture into the board within five years. We have seen MDF louvres become permanently stiff — unable to close fully — within seven years because the panel has distorted sufficiently to change the geometry of the louvre mechanism.

Why Paulownia handles the Suffolk coast differently


Paulownia is a naturally stable hardwood. Its cell structure is different from MDF in a fundamental way — instead of compressed fibres bonded with resin, Paulownia has an interlocking grain structure that responds to moisture in a controlled, reversible way.


When Paulownia absorbs moisture it expands slightly across the grain. When it dries it contracts back. This is normal behaviour for all timber and it is why natural wood has been used in buildings, furniture and fixtures in coastal environments for thousands of years. The key is that the movement is predictable, manageable and does not cause permanent distortion.


Paulownia's moisture content is also naturally low compared to many other hardwoods. This means the amount of movement it undergoes in response to humidity changes is smaller than a denser species like oak or ash would experience. For a shutter panel that needs to close precisely against a frame, minimal movement is a practical advantage.


The finish applied to a Paulownia shutter stays adhered because the substrate beneath it is stable and the movement at panel edges is minimal. The louvre mechanism continues to operate correctly because the panel geometry does not change significantly. The shutter looks the same in year fifteen as it did in year one — with routine maintenance — because the material it is made from has not fundamentally changed.

The weight difference and why it matters for Suffolk's period properties


Beyond the moisture question, weight is the other significant practical difference between hardwood and MDF in the context of Suffolk's housing stock.


MDF is a dense material. A full-height MDF shutter panel for a standard Victorian sash window is a heavy object. Multiply that across a bay window or a whole house and the cumulative weight on the original window frames, hinges and fixings is significant.


Paulownia is one of the lightest commercially available hardwoods. The weight difference between a Paulownia panel and an MDF panel of the same dimensions is not marginal — it is substantial. For a Victorian property in Bury St Edmunds, a Georgian townhouse in Woodbridge or a medieval cottage in Lavenham, this difference matters.


Original window frames were not engineered to carry heavy modern fixtures. Sash mechanisms, glazing bars and the timber surrounds of a 150-year-old window are structurally sound in most cases — but they do not benefit from carrying additional unnecessary weight. Lighter shutters mean less stress on original fabric, less wear on hinges and fixings and a better long-term outcome for the building as a whole.


This is particularly relevant in listed buildings, where the principle of minimal intervention means using the lightest, least intrusive fixing method that achieves the desired result. Paulownia shutters make this considerably easier than MDF shutters would.

The cost argument — and why it does not favour MDF over time


MDF shutters cost less upfront. This is true and it is the main commercial argument for them.

But the relevant comparison is not upfront cost — it is total cost over the life of the window treatment. And on that basis the picture is different.


If MDF shutters in a coastal Suffolk property last eight years before requiring replacement — and in our experience that is an optimistic estimate for a seafront property in Southwold or Aldeburgh — then a homeowner who installs MDF shutters today and replaces them twice over twenty five years will spend considerably more than the homeowner who installs hardwood shutters once and maintains them with basic care.


The fitting cost alone — which applies each time shutters are replaced — is a significant factor. Professional shutter fitting is not inexpensive. Paying for it three times rather than once eliminates any upfront saving from MDF very quickly.


This is not a theoretical calculation. It is what we have seen play out across Suffolk in properties where decisions were made on the basis of upfront cost rather than whole-life value. The homeowners who chose hardwood fifteen or twenty years ago still have their shutters. The ones who chose MDF have often already replaced them once.
